Equinox has been and gone. As we tumble towards winter a definite chill has crept into the evenings. The threat of Storm Lorenzo lies ahead of us this week. Let’s hope the gales are not too damaging when he rampages across Ireland in a few days time. One thing is for sure, very few apples will be left clinging to the branches in the orchard. We’ve had a bumper harvest this year and I’m already contemplating what to do with all the windfalls. Some will go to my smallholder friend who keeps pigs. I will dehydrate the best ones, make apple sauce with others and my apple ginger cake recipe will get its annual airing.
There is still plenty of variety to be had when stocking up on seasonal fruit and vegetables in October. Here is a selection of what to look for when out shopping this month.
